Thames River Cruises from Tower Pier, by the Tower of London
Lunch or afternoon tea on the river, the Tower of London's own 40-minute river tour, or a speedboat under Tower Bridge, all boarding at Tower Pier in front of the Tower. Which boats stop here, and what each costs.
For a meal on the river that starts at the Tower, book the Thames lunch cruise. It leaves Tower Pier, in front of the Tower of London, sails up past the Shard, Parliament and the London Eye and comes back in 105 minutes, with a two-course lunch and tea or coffee, for $71 per person (4.5 from 2,277 reviews, checked October 2026). Panoramic windows give a view from every table. If you would rather spend 40 minutes and $25, the Tower of London River Tour leaves the same pier with a live guide telling the Tower’s stories from the water.
Which boats leave from Tower Pier
Tower Millennium Pier sits on the river in front of the Tower, a few minutes’ walk from the entrance. These cruises board there:
- The lunch cruise ($71, 105 minutes) and the afternoon tea cruise ($66, 1.5 hours), both run by City Cruises, both round trips. The tea cruise serves sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, cakes and unlimited tea and coffee.
- The evening cruise with bubbly and canapés ($54), the short evening option.
- The Tower of London River Tour ($25, 40 minutes, 4.8 from 144 reviews), a round trip with a guide whose stories were curated by Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that runs the Tower, on what the operator describes as the UK’s first electric tour boat. You get a guaranteed seat at a set time.
- The 20-minute Tower RIB blast ($43), a speedboat that runs under Tower Bridge to Canary Wharf and back with the Bond theme on the speakers.
- The City Cruises hop-on hop-off boats: the 24-hour ticket from $33 and the one-day river pass listed from $13, both stopping at Westminster, the London Eye, Tower Pier and Greenwich. Compare what each includes on your date, because the two prices are far apart.
Coming from the West End, the Big Bus ticket with the London Eye and a river cruise ($74) includes a one-way boat from Westminster to Tower Pier, about 40 minutes, so you can arrive at the Tower by river.
The Tower and a cruise on one day
A morning inside the Tower and a lunch or afternoon cruise fit into one day without crossing town. Start with the Tower of London tour with a Beefeater, which covers the Crown Jewels, then walk down to the pier. From the water you see what the visit inside cannot show you: the Tower’s whole river frontage, with Tower Bridge right alongside. HMS Belfast, the Second World War cruiser run by the Imperial War Museum, is moored almost opposite.
For Tower Bridge views, take a boat heading downriver, because those pass right under it: the RIB, and the hop-on hop-off boats on their way to Greenwich. The bridge itself is free to walk across, and if you want photos of yourself with it, the Tower Bridge sunrise photoshoot works around the same riverside.

Cruises from elsewhere on the river
Most sightseeing cruises start at Westminster rather than the Tower. The Westminster to Greenwich boat ($23) is the most booked Thames river cruise by a wide margin, with 25,699 reviews: about an hour to Greenwich, calling at Embankment, Festival and Bankside and passing under Tower Bridge on the way. The Cutty Sark, the tea clipper built in 1869, stands in dry dock a short walk from Greenwich Pier. The shorter Westminster to Tower Bridge cruise ($19) ends at Butler’s Wharf Pier, on the south bank just past Tower Bridge.
For an evening, the dinner cruise ($106) is three hours with three courses, a glass of sparkling wine and a live singer, and the Thames Rockets speedboat ($70) is 50 minutes at up to 30 knots with a comedian guide, rated 4.9 from 1,045 reviews.

The river bus or a sightseeing cruise?
London also has a commuter boat. Uber Boat by Thames Clippers runs the River Bus along the same stretch of river, and Transport for London says you can pay with contactless or Oyster and get a third off if you hold a Travelcard. If you only need to get between piers, it does the job. A sightseeing cruise adds a commentary on what you are passing, from Parliament to the Tower, which is most of the reason a first-time visitor is on the river at all; the Tower of London River Tour does that in 40 minutes from the Tower itself.
Before you book
The cancellation rules differ more than the prices do. The Tower river tour, the RIB and the sightseeing boats refund up to 24 hours before, the City Cruises hop-on hop-off ticket up to an hour before, but the lunch, afternoon tea, evening and dinner cruises need 3 days’ notice. On the lunch cruise the dress code is smart casual, tables seat four and some sit close to other diners. Take a layer for the open deck in any season, because the wind on the river is colder than the street.

What Our Guests Say
"Pleasant and relaxing experience, friendly guide. We had a great spot at the front of the boat. The food was excellent. We had a good time. Maybe a little more entertainment or background music would have been nice."
"An excellent trip on the river while enjoying a really good meal."
"This whole experience was superb! The views are just as advertised in a boat covered in glass. The food and staff were exceptional. Because the boat took us in both directions, back and forth, we missed nothing. The architecture and history narration was sporadic, but not overwhelming. We still can't get over or stop talking about the fun we had on this London cruise!"
"It's almost two very pleasant hours. The trip on the River Thames offers spectacular views of some of its most iconic buildings. Highly recommended."
"The greeting and service from the staff was lovely. the commentary interesting and funny even if it was fairly obviously pre recorded. The route the boat took was absolutely great. The food was of high standard, very tasty and pleased all our party and catered for various allergies. Made an effort as it was a birthday celebration but not too much fuss to embarrass! Efficient and on time and really nice."
"Fantastic day - wonderful food, staff very welcoming and professional, great narrative about the Thames and London (some of which as a Londoner I never knew) and cruise boat has fabulous views"
"We were very surprised by the quality of the lunch we had during the cruise tour. We are really delighted. Thank you very much. In addition, our waiter was really very pleasant."

What people ask before booking a boat at the Tower of London.
Yes. Tower Millennium Pier is on the river in front of the Tower, a few minutes' walk from the entrance. The lunch cruise, the afternoon tea cruise, the evening cruise with bubbly, the Tower of London River Tour and the Tower RIB blast all board there, and the City Cruises hop-on hop-off boats stop there.
City Cruises' lunch, afternoon tea and evening cruises start and finish at Tower Pier, and its hop-on hop-off boats call there on the way between Westminster, the London Eye and Greenwich. The Tower of London River Tour and the 20-minute Tower RIB blast also leave from it. Most sightseeing boats to Greenwich start at Westminster instead.
It depends on the boat. From Tower Pier, the RIB blast takes 20 minutes, the Tower of London River Tour 40 minutes, the afternoon tea cruise 1.5 hours and the lunch cruise 105 minutes. From Westminster, the sightseeing boat to Tower Bridge takes 25 to 30 minutes and the one to Greenwich about an hour; the dinner cruise lasts three hours.
From Tower Pier: the Tower of London River Tour from $25, the RIB blast from $43, afternoon tea from $66 and the lunch cruise from $71 per person. Sightseeing boats from Westminster start at $19 to Tower Bridge and $23 to Greenwich, and the dinner cruise costs from $106 (all checked October 2026).
For most first-time visitors, yes. From the water you see the Tower's whole river frontage, Tower Bridge, the Shard, St Paul's, Parliament and the London Eye in one trip, which no single walk gives you. The lunch cruise from Tower Pier adds a meal to it; the Tower of London River Tour does it in 40 minutes with a live guide.
Tower Millennium Pier is on the north bank of the Thames, directly in front of the Tower of London and just upriver of Tower Bridge. Tower Hill Underground station is a short walk away. HMS Belfast is moored almost opposite, on the south bank.
Yes, a 1.5-hour afternoon tea cruise from Tower Pier, from $66 per person (checked October 2026). It serves sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, cakes and unlimited tea and coffee, and the VIP upgrade adds front-row seats and a glass of champagne. Child menus are available.
Yes, and from close up. Tower Pier is just upriver of the bridge, so every cruise leaving it has Tower Bridge in view. Boats heading downriver pass right under it, including the Tower RIB blast and the hop-on hop-off boats on their way to Greenwich. The bridge itself is free to walk across.
A 40-minute round trip from Tower Pier with a live guide, whose stories were curated by Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that runs the Tower. Seats are guaranteed at a set time, and the operator describes its boat as the UK's first electric tour boat. It costs from $25 and is rated 4.8 from 144 reviews (checked October 2026).
No. Uber Boat by Thames Clippers runs the River Bus, a commuter service between piers that you pay for with contactless or Oyster; Transport for London gives a third off to Travelcard holders. Sightseeing cruises run a similar stretch with a commentary on the landmarks, which is what most visitors want.
Two are famous for different reasons. HMS Belfast, a Second World War cruiser, is moored beside Tower Bridge as part of the Imperial War Museum, almost opposite Tower Pier. The Cutty Sark, a tea clipper built in 1869, is in dry dock at Greenwich, a short walk from where the Greenwich cruises land.
It varies. The Tower of London River Tour, the RIB and the sightseeing boats refund up to 24 hours before, and the City Cruises hop-on hop-off ticket up to an hour before. The lunch, afternoon tea, evening and dinner cruises need 3 days' notice for a full refund, so book those once your dates are fixed.
